It’s Time to Enshrine the Right to Defend Your Home
Every Australian should have the right to feel safe in their own home. Yet more and more people across the Fadden electorate are telling me they’re worried that if they defend themselves or their family during a break-in, they could end up in legal trouble.
This is absolutely backwards.
I support the introduction of a clear and fair self-defence law based on the Castle Doctrine. The principle is simple. If someone unlawfully enters your home, you have the right to use reasonable force to protect yourself, your family, and your property – without fearing prosecution.
This is not about encouraging violence. It’s about protecting innocent people from becoming victims twice – once at the hands of an intruder, and again at the hands of the legal system. You shouldn’t need to second guess yourself in the heat of a terrifying situation. The law should have your back.
Our current laws are vague. They leave too much up to interpretation. That uncertainty only benefits criminals. We need legal protections that are clear, consistent, and firmly on the side of homeowners.
This is something I hear often from locals across the Gold Coast. People are doing everything right, yet they feel abandoned by a system that seems more concerned about offenders than the rights of decent Australians trying to protect their families.
As someone already advocating for stronger community safety in Fadden, I believe it’s time to get serious. If elected, I will fight to introduce and protect your right to defend your home with confidence and without fear of legal backlash.
Because in your home, your safety should come first.
